Emails from the side of the road.
(me)
I am sitting on the side of the road because i have a freaking flat
tire. But i am at least on the beach highway.
I will not let this deter me. Kate is playing in the sand and after i
get this bad boy fixed i am going to the mall! At least thats my plan.
I know how to change a flat, but i dont trust my skills enough to do
that today. So im waiting.
(friend)
It is like a norman rockwell painting. Who are you getting to fix it?
(me)
What is like a painting?
The only person who would answer their phone is my friend who is my
health insurance agent. He just got here, just in time to rescue me
from the 1 person who stopped-this old man who played 21 questions to
find out my life story while he just sat in his truck. He had helpful
comments like "you are very attractive" and "are you dating anyone"
and "men dont always think with the right head.". Yes those helped my
tire immensely. So it took these two men to loosen the lugnuts and i
should be rollin on the spare in 5.
We were just kickin it on the beach. Kate took all her clothes off and
as a good momma im always prepared. I had sunscreen and beach toys so
it was good. It took both men to finish the tire. The spare, of
course, was flat so one of the men, the one that was using his *head*
had a tire blower upper thingie so they did that, one followed me to
the tire store and promptly left. So it was just Kate, me, and the
caveman running the gulfport firestone. Here's what i told him. Please
keep in mind this is my first flat.
M=me
FC=firestone caveman.
M: hello sir. You look like a busy man. I am a busy girl. Lets not
waste each other's time. I have a flat and i want to know if you can
fix it.
FC-well i dont know if i can fix it. We have to look at it.
M: ok well do you have time to look at it.
FC-yes but it depends on how long you have.
M:well im very patient. She (kate) is not. (FC laughs). How long are
we talking?
FC: well it will be 45 minutes before we can look at it and then if we
can fix it it wont take too long.
M: ok well I figure if I go anywhere else it will take that long
right? (I was joking)
FC: haha yeah. Which tire is it?
M: um the right left no right. Right front.
FC: do you mean passenger front?
M: yes that's the lingo. Glad you know it.
FC: well I should know the lingo.
M: well this is my first flat tire.
FC: well I am honored.
M: ok we are going to find some food and well be back.
The store was of course full of men so I know I looked silly. While
walking out one of the men said "there's a cafe across the street."
Now I felt obligated to go because I didn't see anywhere else.
So we walked across the street. I am in downtown gulfport at this
point. What does the sign on the door say in handwriting? No credit or
debit cards. I have no cash. I asked it they would take a check and
they said yes. This restaurant is about the size of two dorm rooms.
They bring me a menu and it was just written today on a piece of paper
with a blue pen. So what does one do in a situation like that? Order
the daily special. Fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, tea,
rolls and cake. For 6 dollars. Since kate and I split stuff she ate
the cake and the green beans and I ate barely none because I am too
wrapped up in this tale to eat. Plus I got gravy on my berry. This
place is great. The kitchen lady came out and said "let's take a
vote. Should we cut the oreo pie?" People said yes so she did. What a
democracy here! All the cooks are 60 years or above so I know they
are seasoned. There is a tv on with days of our lives on with the
subtitles on so they can stop and watch it.
So I'm here with about 5 other hungry people and of course my cup is
always full of sweet tea.
The adult male busboy noticed I was texting (he thought) and walked
over and said "what did we do before we had it? What will we do know?"
I said what are you talking about? He said text messaging. I said oh I
don't know. He said "do you go to gulfport high?" I said no I'm way
past college and he said oh well you have a twin. I went to high
school with a girl like you. First of all, he's like 30. So if I was
currently in high school hopefully he's not still there?
Now we are finished eating and the nice lady just brought us some
complimentary vanilla pudding. That's funny but its so nice!
So now its kates naptime and I'm trying to entertain her. I can call today T day. Tire day 2008. A day that will live in
infamy. And NOW all the people I called are calling me back....
and at 3 pm we were released and ready to go. Thank you God for the fun, patience, and the ability to sit and call random friends on the side of the road-it was actually good!!!
Please send donations for the tire c/o Cammie Chapman.

She's home!!!
23 April 2008
so i am on vacation from work. a non working vacation. at home, though. kate is away visiting so i am doing all the things that i can before she comes home that i can't do while she's here. i don't really know what those are but reading a book is one of them. i have also picked up running as a hobby now so i have been working very hard on that. and i wouldn't have mentioned that if i didn't want you to know so yea for me. 3.4 miles yesterday. (most of) the bay bridge baby.
it's too quiet without kate taylor. i miss that bear.
i have gone to the beach, perfect beach weather. i've done lots of things, too much to remember, and all pretty fun. i can't say that i enjoy hanging out at the house at night with everyone else busy. that's pretty sad. but i'm an only child so i make the best of it.
sorry for no blogging lately. i have some pics to upload and when i'm not too busy being un busy i will show you.
so please pray for God to continue to show me wonderful things with all this time to reflect!

Bedtime Banter
Tonight, just now, as I tucked Kate in, she said, "can you close me in bed?" I have no idea what that means except maybe pulling the canopy closed. So I did, tucked her in, night night etc. A few minutes later, I passed by her room, and heard "MAMA!" So I checked in, Kate said "I have to sit right here." She was not on her pillow. She was in the corner of her bed, pulling toys out of her toy net. I said, "Kate, it's time to go to sleep." She said, "No, teddy bear is going to sleep." I looked at her pillow and teddy bear was lying right on the pillow. I think she was trying to fake me out so she could sneak out to hang out with some kids later tonight or something. Then she had her pretend phone. She said, "I need to make a phone call." I said, "Who are you going to call?" She said, "Sam and Katie and Robin." I said, ok. She said, "Hello?" into the phone, and then asked me for some milk. I got the milk, told her to keep the long distance calls to a minimum, and told her to settle herself down to go to sleep. I think this has been going on for a few nights recently. Last night about 20 minutes after tucking her in I heard some maracas shaking from her bed-I think maybe she was having a fiesta but I didn't go in.

since my last post i've explored Ocean Springs with two good friends, endured hardships from sharing Kate, had communion-so amazing, dealt with a crappy cell phone, returned things, cleaned, swiffered, sent proposals for my business, Lagniapped, played babies with Kate. (I love that one. ) Cleaned her scraped knee, made some ponytails for both of us, Dwell Well-ed my bedroom, did dishes, checked out my fellow bloggers, prayed, had in depth discussions with my neighbors about swinging (not in a swing!), been sunburned, been thankful for sunscreen and aloe vera, been thankful for crocs, thankful for good friends that will listen. Been amazed at grace.
been calmed by this song and its truth for my life.
Time to tell me the truth
To burden your mouth for what you say
No pieces of paper in the way
Cause i cant continue pretending to choose
The opposite sides on which we fall
The loving you laters if at all
No right minds could wrong be this many times
My memory is cruel
Im queen of attention to details
Defending intentions if he fails
Until now, he told me her name
It sounded familiar in a way
I could have sworn i'd heard him say it ten thousand times
If only i had been listening
Leave unsaid unspoken
Eyes wide shut unopened
You and me
Always between the lines
Between the lines
I thought i thought i was ready to bleed
That we'd move from the shadows on the wall
And stand in the center of it all
Too late two choices to stay or to leave
Mine was so easy to uncover
He'd already left with the other
So i've learned to listen through silence
Leave unsaid unspoken
Eyes wide shut unopened
You and me be
You and me always be
I tell myself all the words he surely meant to say
I'll talk until the conversation doesn't stay on
Wait for me i'm almost ready
When he meant let go
Leave unsaid unspoken
Eyes wide shut unopened
You and me
Always be
You and me
Always between the lines

The Great Sunscreen Event of 2008
it was a little too quiet in kate's room.
she found her spray gun of sunscreen and thought it would be really cool to squirt it around her room. I was not happy but I laughed a lot.
She didn't laugh when I caught her but her dollhouse had to take a bath. She did, too.
Even her dolls caught some shrapnel. At least they are UV protected now.

Oh yeah!
I would be remiss to not mention the fact that God was amazing today in so many ways. He amazingly had one of my favorite high school friends call me today, out of the blue thanks to google, someone I've been searching for since 1999!!! What perfect timing. The conversation was so natural. It was refreshing and encouraging and perfect. Poor friend for calling me-now there's a duty to follow up with me. I hope he can stand it.
Here's to friends and Duncan Shiek.

Swanky Memories
Anyone remember Swanky Girl? Yes I know it is now but a memory, but it was my up and coming purse/jewelry business where I had 15 stores carrying my products. It was a career and I sewed myself to death. Don't try to go to my website, my web hosting person didn't renew my site so it's down.
That's okay but those were good days. Apparently somehow people can find me. I received this email today:
I like your bags. Are you selling them through any stores already?
We work with specialty gift shops, women's clothing stores, department stores, large retailers, and mail-order catalog companies who search our website looking for bags to purchase. We need a larger variety they can choose from, hence my email to you.
If you're able to sell to stores and can offer good prices visit us at http://www.WiseRep.com
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mark Pardue

Granted, he's trying to make money off of me, but hey he found me! Thank you Jesus for my Swanky Girl days and the esteem I learned from it. Here I will google it and see what I find.
1. I have been asked if I have anything to do with the Swanky Girl tanning products. No, I had the name before they did, they stole it from me. I do not make tanning lotions.
2. Heck yes I am so glad this is still online. My first press release.
I did work at the Reflector during college but that had nothing to do with this article. I just think she had an easy subject to write about. Those were some good, good times.
3. Heck yes my article in the Mississippi Business Journal. Students snapping up Swanky Girl Designs' handbags, accessories.

LOUISVILLE -- When Cammie Britt Chapman was whipping up eye-catching purses in vintage prints to complement her outfits, she never dreamed other people would be interested in buying them. But her husband, Andy Chapman, thought otherwise.
"I always thought she could sell them because they were so good," he said.
Retailers throughout Mississippi who carry her products--Swanky Girl Designs--are glad Chapman listened to him. "Delta State students love her purses," said Heather Short, owner of Posh, a boutique in Cleveland. "So do high school girls. ...

Cheers to the old days.

Chuckie Chiquizee
If you don't watch American Idol you will not get the title of this post. I really don't want to write much but I was so excited I thought of that title I had to write something.
R,S,K, Kate and I went to Chuckie Chiquizee today and it was something. It included no naps, lots of running, Kate crying a lot because she was grumpy. It was so cute to watch the little ones in awe of Chuckie-almost like he was real-they were amazed at his singing and dancing. I laughed so hard when S and K and K were on "tv", the blue screen background where the kids were dancing and on tv. Kate was dancing her heart out. I haven't laughed like that in a long time. They took it seriously.

Facebook: It is what it is.
Facebook is something else. I heard my pastor talking about it once-he said, "Isn't it funny that we all try to put our BEST picture on facebook? we wouldn't dare put a horrible picture of us on there. Facebook is a place for us to look our best, talk about ourselves in the good light. It's actually somewhat untruthful."
I agree. I kind of feel like I'm writing my bio for a pageant or something. What if we did put real pictures of ourselves on there-when we don't have makeup on, when the kids are screaming and we are overwhelmed. What if we wrote what our REAL interests were: ourselves, instant gratification, sleep, not having to deal with tough situations, no work, no homework. If we wanted to never be sick again or never be lonely or that we hated our life or that we hated situations or that we could be honest about what those are.
Instead, we put happy little status messages on there. "I'm mowing the grass. I'm doing the dishes." If you are typing in your status message, then you AREN'T doing what you say you are. Shouldn't our real status be "Typing in a status message"? If you are typing in your status message, you aren't YET mowing the grass.
I think the most idiosyncratic one would be "_________ is tired." Ok. If you have time to get on Facebook and tell everyone you are tired, you aren't THAT tired. If you really are tired, don't get on facebook! Maybe you want someone to ask you why you are so tired. Maybe you should say "I'm tired but not too tired to log on to my computer and log into facebook and check my wall and write that I am tired." That would sound stupid but it would be true. "cammie is tired." so, maybe ______ is hungry and maybe _________ is thirsty. Do we really need to give the entire facebook world that kind of information? I have over 500 friends and do they really care if I am thirsty or hungry? Probably not. What if I wrote "Cammie has $10,000,000 to give away"? I'd probably get more than 500 friends.
I also have a problem with "It is what it is." I have said that a lot lately and it really means nothing. "How are you, Cammie?" "I'm okay." "How is your situation?" "It is what it is." Heads nod. What in the hell does that mean? What is IT? Why is IT it? It's just a space filler, basically letting you know I have no idea. Maybe I should just say I have no idea. It is what it is-that sounds like I'm profound and I just had a thought so profound that I had to word it confusingly. No one even questions me when I say that phrase. "Oh, it is what it is. Okay. So it's just what it is. What it is is what it is. That makes sense."
That makes sense like this Brian Regan joke. "What if you were not sure about calling and renting a teepee for the night at an Indian campground? That would be a Reservation Reservation Reservation." Think that one through-it is what it is.

What an amazing Kate I have. Sleeps very well, very obedient. (I'm talking about today. Yesterday was quite challenging. She was very disobedient, but I owe it to being around the neighbor kids. I do not tolerate yelling at me (Kate) but the other mom yells at her kids and it drives me crazy. 1)It doesn't make them do what she's telling them to do. 2)It's obnoxious. I'm working on a conversation with her about it. So far we have discussed diapers, pacifiers, milk, tithing, differences between denominations, my work at Lagniappe (those are not small conversations, either!) Also have discussed some other strange topics, but I am so glad that this world (this town) is not so cookie cutter that I have to smile and nod. I can say, "I definitely do not agree with that." And the world doesn't miss a beat after I utter those words. Hm!
Yesterday like I mentioned was very challenging. I had not go out and get em. I was really down. I did the marathon of "The Hills" and that totally absolved me of doing any serious thinking for 2 hours. Thank you Jesus. Yes, thank You for the Hills.
I really don't like Spencer.
Today was better. Thank You that I do have rent money as of today. That's awesome. Kate and I spent a long day at Lagniappe today, meetings, etc. She did a great job building with blocks and letting Jordan scratch her back. She really liked that! We also had the 101 Dalmatians book so she yelled out "Perdido" throughout the meeting.
Not too much, though.
I pulled 2 April Fools at work today, of which I am very proud. I didn't want to do any but they both involved volunteers that I told the staff were coming-next week- and it was hilarious to watch faces drop. I thought maybe I'd wake up today and-April Fools-this is all a joke. But no one popped out and told me that.
I am typing from the bathroom. Kate is taking a bath and drinking the bathwater out of a turtle. Yes, I am watching her.
So I was at Walmart today. This man, by the lobster tank, hit on us. (Us=Me and/or Kate). He said, "You have a beautiful little girl." I said thanks but inside I thought OH GOD He is going to steal my child and take her to his meth lab run away. I pretended to look at the seafood but I was really freaked out because although I know Kate is pretty, that did not seem right. He offered the information without my asking that he had 3 little girls but that their mother and stepfather did not let him come around much. OH GOD why is he telling me this. What has he done to not let them see him. Why would he tell me that off hand. What does this mean. (Yeah, my mind jumps to conclusions.) I said, "Oh, that stinks." He stuck out his hand and said, "I'm Tommy." What do you do then? You have to shake. He said,"Hopefully I'll see you around again." I said, "Mmm Hmm" and we ran to the banana section. Now, I must think of what God would have done. He would not have judged like that. He would have maybe talked to the man a bit, just to listen, and then offer some comfort. I don't think I should have done that. I felt sorry for him. Does he not know how messed up my world is? Of course he doesn't he just saw me. He was old and scary.
I don't even know why I'm blogging this; it just caught me off guard. Normally my walmart time is quiet and I don't even see anyone I know there. He disrupted my routine. I wanted to protect my child.
We got out of there without harm. :-) I mean it didn't even make my ego soar. That's pretty bad.
I think it's time to get Kate out of the tub.
One good quote from staff meeting today that made me stop and think about how my daily actions affect my life/job/family/friends. Jean said, "What we are doing...it affects our entire denomination. It is changing things." We talked about how we don't really want to have Elders because don't want the charity to be done by just the Elders-we want everyone to take part in that. Not just the deacons. Everyone. What will the rest of us do if only the deacons help people? We'll do what most of us do. Go to WIC, go to Bible study, play with other Christian moms and kids, only eat at the cool people's table. And when folks like that guy in walmart come into our day, we freak out. He doesn't get to sit at the cool table. And why not? Because I said so. That is terrible. We need to be eating with the ones we don't know, helping the ones that no one will help. If you are pretty comfortable with what you do, I don't think that's doing much at all. I think we have to be scared to learn things and to get out of the box. And we need to affect not only the denomination, but FIRST our families and then our world. I'm not saying I should have held his hand today, but I could have not been so judgemental.
